I was deeply involved in public health in Beijing and all of China during my ten years there from 2006-2016. This interview below, from 2014, is a perfect 30-minute summary of my life there, my goals, and how I was trying to make an impact in bringing family medicine to China; providing fact-filled advice about air pollution and food safety; and trying to push the fact that lifestyle choices were still far more important than any public health threat.
It’s from an interview with expat Fergus Thompson in 2014, on a Chinese-focused show called On The Level on the BON TV network, which unfortunately is now defunct (you can see their archives here.) I hope you enjoy:
Our broadcast focused mostly on air pollution in China; so, collected some of my important articles that we were discussing on the show. Note that these take you to my earlier website, myhealthbeijing.com.
- Air Pollution: How Bad Is It, Really? – a good primer
- My Air Quality Journal: 太可怕! – discusses my ParticleScan results
- Air Pollution in China: New Slideshow – online slideshow with basics
- Air Pollution: What About Indoor Air? – that can be bad as well…
- Pollution: Close Your Windows at Night – yes, overnight is usually worst
- How Good are N95 Masks For Pollution? – really good! Find out why
- Indoor Plants: Natural Air Purifiers – they work wonders
You’re welcome to check out host Fergus’ tea house in Uppsala, where he now lives.
